Throughout the day we were all doing our own thing then checking back in with each other.  Margaret had a show & sound check at 5p so we were farting around until then.  Crissy and I headed over to the What Stage (the main stage) and were able to access the side VIP area to watch the show.  We got to see Erykah in all her glory.

Margaret performed at about 6pm and it went over really well.  She was a “surprise guest” in the comedy tent and did two musical numbers.

Afterwards, we decided to catch a bit more music so we headed over to Band of Horses.  While walking over there, I could hear the “la dee da dee da dee das” of Neko Case, her voice echoing off tents from across the festival grounds.  Pretty cool.

We left shortly after and made our way back to Atlanta.  Everyone was elated over the weekend.  It was really an excellent time and an excellent festival.  I have a bunch of postcards to put up on the blog (got a few more yesterday even) and will do that this week.  I’ll try and cut a quick video of everything too.  So stayed tuned.

I went in to watch the press panel as Margaret was on it along side Brent Denner, Robyn Hitchcock, Robert Kennedy Jr, Jimmy Buffet, and Jimmy Buffet’s Caribbean singer guy.  It was pretty interesting. Brent made a comment about wanting to make babies at Bonnaroo and Robyn came back with this (after the fold):

We walked around, did our thing, and then went to the “Artist Only” area where there’s free food and drinks.  If you ever wanted to know what was on an “Artist Only” buffet then here’s your chance.

Then, we got escorted through the crowd to the SPIN Magazine music tent.

We went through the day doing our thing and eventually saw some bands.  We went over to see Of Montreal and there were really great.  At the end of their show, they destroyed all of their equipment and threw it out into the audience.  Talk about an easy clean up.

We just hung out and walked around after this.  I met a few people and got them to sign postcards…  Drew Barrymore, her boyfriend Justin (who is the “Mac guy” in the Mac vs. PC ads), Justin from Bon Iver, Colin from The Decemberists, a few more comedians, and etc, etc.  I did stop by to see Bruce Springsteen but only stayed there a minute.  

I headed over to Nine Inch Nails and they were excellent.  They were being SUPER strict with pass access (apparently the NIN people had their own brand of VIP passes) so there really wasn’t anywhere to watch things.  I ended up climbing onto a scaffolding and watching a bit from there.  I was told to get down.  Then I got back up.  Then I got kicked out.

No worries though.  I went over to MGMT and became a part of the clusterfuck that it was.  They were good… not great, which was surprising.  I then left and went over to the Silent Disco.

The Silent Disco is a tent where there’s a hardcore DJ but everyone wears headphones.  So you walk in and you can’t actually hear anything… anything besides people clapping and singing along to a song, somewhere.  It was so incredible!  Check these out:

I totally want to do this at 1113 one day.  I gotta make it happen.

After that, I caught the shuttle back and went to bed.  I was beat.  (And too tired to write a summary so here you get it Sunday morning!)

• Do they shuttle in stars from their hotels in Nashville?
• Will I be waiting at a bus stop with Bruce Springsteen, David Byrne, or Neko Case?
• What’s it like backstage?
• Does Elvis Costello have to use a port-o-pot?
• Do we get to eat for free?
• Are bands and artists just hanging out?
• Are they partying?
• How far will I get with me and my camera?
• Will I get to hang out with Snoop Dogg?

 That last one is actually a goal of mine.  I want to meet Snoop Dogg!

One random story starts with another as Margaret was introduced to me through my friend Crissy.  A few weeks back, Crissy wrote Margaret an email through her blog.  Crissy is Korean-American like Margaret so she wrote to thank her for keeping it real and helping her feel “normal.”  Long story short: Margaret ends up emailing Crissy back and they begin a dialogue.  More random: Margaret just started a 5 month shoot south of Atlanta and was going to be around through August.  Even more random: Margaret said “let’s meet” and Crissy said “yes, on Kyle’s porch!”

Fast forward to last Wednesday: Crissy, Trevor, Bucky, and myself are sitting on the porch waiting to see if Margaret Cho was really about to walk on up (it would either be her or the crew of candid camera). The gang was feeling a bit nervous about if it would actually happen or not but I felt pretty confident that it was.  Why wouldn’t it?  Crissy gets a call from her mom and I walk inside to check email.  Two minutes later, up walks Margaret Cho.

Crissy immediately let’s out a scream and walks down to greet Margaret. The first nervous words out of her mouth were “here, talk to my mother!”  And she hands Margaret the phone.

I come out to meet her, give her a tour of the place (“this has to be the best house in Atlanta”), and then we hang out for a bit.  Crissy talks with her about growing up, how she always gets mistaken for being Cho, and how she even used it to get access and free drinks to a club in San Francisco.  Cho thought it was hilarious.

We were playing "Which One is Margaret Cho?" on the porch. Now you can too.

Since last Wednesday, Margaret and Crissy have hung out quite a bit.  I’ve gotten closer to both of them and we’ve all had a lot of fun (Mary’s, Atlanta Rollergirls, Flip Burger, The Clermont Lounge, MondoHomo Fundraiser).  It’s been great… and interesting.

I imagine we will spend a fair bit of time together this summer.  I’ve become her “Atlanta boyfriend” (Crissy has become her “twinsies bff”).  Margaret and I talked about doing some shooting together on our own so hopefully we get time to do that.  With everything else, her presence should be an interesting element to this summer’s events.  I also think it will inspire some observations on people, celebrity, myself, and the intersection of all of them.  It already has.
 

But for now, it’s just about the fun of it.  Margaret Cho is great.  Crissy is great.  Atlanta is still great. And this summer will probably be awesome – unless I lose my house or a testicle or something (but at least we have the right people lined up to make really good jokes about it if I do).
